Antenatal Education, Hypnobirthing & Birth Planning
Comprehensive preparation for labour, birth and beyond
There is so much to take in during pregnancy. Your body is changing, advice feels endless and sometimes contradictory, and the weight of decisions you've never had to make before can feel overwhelming. Standard antenatal classes, including some of the most famous ones out there, tend to be brief, focused on pre-defined ideas of what birth should look like, and fail to take into account the wider options and individual needs of the attendants. This can leave people feeling underprepared for birth, or like they failed or weren't quite prepared enough after they give birth. They rarely give you the time, space or depth you need to feel truly empowered to make the right decisions for you. My antenatal education is different. It's built entirely around you, your pregnancy and your desires for birth. It's designed to leave you feeling genuinely confident, informed of all your options (not just the ones that fit a certain rhetoric), and excited about what's ahead.
Every programme I deliver is individualised, but at a minimum generally covers physiology (i.e. the science of how your body works during and after pregnancy and birth), how to look after and prepare your body for birth, your legal rights, labour and birth options, feeding and how to care for yourself and newborn optimally in the postpartum. All this is presented with unbiased, evidence-based information so you can make decisions that feel right for you, not decisions made for you. Whether this is your first baby or your third, whether you're planning a homebirth or a caesarean, the content is shaped around your circumstances, your questions and your priorities. Nothing is generic, and nothing is left out because someone else in the room didn't need to hear it - I will always offer you the opportunity for private conversations if you join a group class.
If you'd like support with your birth plan, we'll create something truly yours: a detailed, personalised document led by your preferences and informed by gold-standard evidence. A good birth plan isn't just a wish list; it's a tool that helps you and your birth partners communicate clearly with your medical team, and a framework that gives both you and them confidence even when things take an unexpected turn. We'll cover everything from your birth environment and pain relief preferences to monitoring, examinations, who you want present and what matters most to you if plans need to change.
For those who want to prepare for a calm and positive birth experience, my hypnobirthing programme teaches powerful techniques that work with the mind-body connection to reduce fear and pain during labour. Through deep breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, positive affirmations and visualisation, you'll learn to embrace labour, trust your body, stay calm under pressure and approach your birth with a quiet confidence that carries you through whatever unfolds. These are tools you and your birth partner can practise together, and many of my clients tell me they use them well beyond birth in everyday life.
Sessions also include an introduction to biomechanics to support optimal positioning before and during labour, as well as acupressure and aromatherapy techniques that you and your birth partner can use alongside biomechanics for natural comfort and pain relief. These hands-on elements are something my clients consistently say made a real difference when it mattered most.
All antenatal packages begin with a welcome consultation call so I can understand exactly where you are and what you need, and include ongoing text, video and phone support between sessions (because questions don't only come up during scheduled appointments). I offer both bespoke 1:1 sessions and small group classes, so you can choose whatever feels most comfortable for you. Postnatal planning is also available as an optional add-on, helping you feel just as prepared for life after birth as you are for birth itself.
Everything is available via virtual sessions, or in person at a location of your choosing throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and London. I can also offer a hybrid of virtual and in-person, so geography is never a barrier. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between antenatal classes and hypnobirthing?
Antenatal education covers the practical knowledge you need for pregnancy, labour, birth and newborn care, including your rights, birth options and what to expect. Hypnobirthing is a specific preparation technique that combines this education with breathing exercises, relaxation and visualisation techniques to reduce fear and pain during labour. Both can be combined in a single programme.
What does hypnobirthing involve?
Hypnobirthing teaches tools that work with the mind-body connection to promote calm during labour (and outside the birth room, too!). These include deep breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, positive affirmations and visualisation. Research published in the Clinical Psychology Review found that hypnosis-based interventions can reduce the use of pharmacological pain relief during labour.
What is included in a private antenatal education programme?
A private programme is fully tailored to you, but typically covers pregnancy and newborn physiology, labour and birth options, your legal rights, evidence-based birth planning, newborn care, and feeding. Group classes are also tailored to those in attendance, but obviously do not offer the privacy of a 1:1 class. Sessions also include an introduction to biomechanics for optimal positioning, acupressure and aromatherapy. All packages include a welcome consultation and ongoing text, video and phone support.
Can my partner attend antenatal classes with me?
Yes. Partners are encouraged to attend and actively participate. Antenatal education and hypnobirthing sessions equip birth partners with practical tools, including breathing techniques, massage, acupressure and comfort measures, so they can provide confident, informed support during labour and birth. It is therefore helpful that anyone else that may be heavily involved (such as grandparents, intended parents or other close family members and friends) is also present.
Are private antenatal classes available online?
Yes. All antenatal education and hypnobirthing programmes are available in person at a location of your choosing within Norfolk, Suffolk, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and London, or virtually via video call from anywhere in the UK or internationally. A hybrid of virtual and in-person is also possible. Both formats can include the same educational content and ongoing support between sessions.
What is included in a personalised birth plan?
A personalised birth plan covers your preferences for every stage of labour and birth, informed by current evidence and your individual circumstances. Topics typically include birth environment, care preferences and needs, who you want present, and contingency preferences if plans change. The plan is created collaboratively and designed to be shared with your medical team to allow them to provide you with care that fully meets your needs.
