Birth story and testimonial

Jasmine & Tyrone overcome their anxieties

“The care that we received from Yas from the very first moment we met her at 7 months pregnant was second to none. Her knowledge was amazing and she left no stone unturned to ensure that we were able to make informed choices…”

Mama Jasmine was planning a homebirth. She got in touch later on in her pregnancy expressing a need to feel more grounded and supported. Dad Tyrone had been anxious about Jasmine having a homebirth and dubious about hiring a doula, but after doing a lot of work together he quickly grew in confidence and became very excited about their homebirth plans. Everything was going splendidly and both parents were feeling super calm and prepared for their impending birth. Sadly, after the 40 week mark Jasmine lost confidence when she attended triage a couple of times for reduced foetal movements. According to the clinical team the CTGs were normal but the hospital were strongly recommending that she have an induction. Jasmine did not want this. Dad Tyrone and the extended family were extremely anxious. Jasmine was torn. Both parents were exhausted from weeks of prodromal labour.

-- something had to give --

Jasmine & Tyrone reluctantly opted for an elective caesarean. I knew Jasmine could probably birth their baby physiologically - she had already been in and out of latent labour, she just needed some space from all the pressure she was experiencing. But I’m a doula and my job is to support whatever decision the parents make - WITH BELLS ON! After a discussion with the doctors about facilitating a beautiful gentle caesarean there was a power cut - so obviously no safe way to perform a caesarean. There were also no midwives available to perform an ARM so mama Jasmine was left overnight to pamper herself and indulge in the last moments of her pregnancy. I had a hunch that this space would probably be all she needed to go into established labour. Baby Kailen was born vaginally the next morning - I almost missed the birth! Needless to say everyone was very emotional. TESTIMONIAL

“The care that we received from Yas from the very first moment we met her at 7 months pregnant was second to none. Her knowledge was amazing and she left no stone unturned to ensure that we were able to make informed choices. I felt fully supported and Tyrone and I both felt so ready for the upcoming birth. With her Doula experience plus her medical background, Yas was the perfect fit for us - as Tyrone was certain that anyone who supported us needed to have some medical knowledge.

Around the time of my due date I started to have some anxieties about baby’s movements and so went in to the hospital to get checked. Sadly this resulted in a lot of stress and pressure put on to me by the hospital and so our plans for a home birth were de railed. Yas walked alongside Tyrone and I throughout this very challenging and stressful period and provided amazing support. She advocated on our behalf and stood by us throughout the whole thing. She also ensured that we had all of the knowledge that we needed to make informed choices about the birth…

…When I was starting to doubt my abilities to labour naturally, Yas instilled me with so much confidence that I could do it. I believe that it’s down to Yas' extremely empowering support that I was able to go into established labour naturally and have a quick and straight forward labour. So quick that she almost missed the birth! However she arrived at the perfect moment. Having Yas present for the birth was amazing and felt so special after the journey she had been on with us.

Her support after the birth was also incredible, she helped so much with my breast feeding journey and relieving my anxieties as a first time mum. She was also able to pick up on an issue with the positioning during feeding and recommend we see an Osteopath. Without her support I would have been struggling on in pain! In those early postpartum days when I was quite overwhelmed and anxious, having her support really helped to ground and empower me.

Both Tyrone and I are immensely grateful for Yas' role in the arrival of our son, which despite not going how we had initially planned, we only look back on with positive memories.”

Thanks so much for everything Yas. You helped me through a lot of fears and worries but most importantly you are there for Jazz throughout the whole thing - even with the breastfeeding you got her off to such a great start!
